APEX – The New Zealand Journal of Gifted Education is a refereed journal that is published once per calendar year.
The aim of APEX is to disseminate evidence-based research and critical commentary in the broad field of gifted and talented students for Aotearoa, New Zealand.
The New Zealand Association for Gifted Children (NZAGC), as owner of APEX, wishes to encourage open access and exchange of information, knowledge and resources. It intends APEX to support the collaborative production of copyright works that are freely available in all areas related to gifted education.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Under the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license users are free to share the work (copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format), if the contribution is properly attributed and used for non-commercial purposes. The material published in the journal may not be altered or build upon.
The New Zealand Association for Gifted Children (NZAGC) will foster the educational and social development of gifted children through the achievement of a climate in which giftedness is recognised, understood and accepted as a valuable human attribute and in which the special needs of gifted children are met fully, effectively and with generosity.
NZAGC, through the National Council, shall set short-term and long-term objectives. The objectives for which NZAGC is established are specified below and shall be restricted at all times to operations within New Zealand.
1. To raise public and professional awareness and understanding of giftedness as the essential platform for the recognition and fulfilment of the needs of the child.
2. In keeping with the principle of equity, to promote improved provisions to ensure gifted children receive an education appropriate to their abilities and needs.
3. To support families belonging to the organisation, to empower them in their decision making and family life, in relation to their gifted child.
4. To support educators belonging to the organisation to empower them in their decision making and teaching of the gifted child.
5. To provide and promote access to information and resources regarding giftedness and gifted children to relevant individuals and groups.
6. To proactively manage a national organisation that will enable the NZAGC to fulfil its mission statement efficiently and effectively.
7. To encourage research into giftedness.
8. To encourage end actively support branches in meeting members’ needs.

Peer Review process
All Manuscript submissions are initially screened for appropriateness, before being reviewed by at least two independent anonymous referees in a blind review process to determine whether the Manuscript will be right to make a final decision regarding publication accepted and published by APEX.
The initial review is envisaged to take approximately 3 months. Author(s) may then be invited to undertake revisions. Completed Manuscripts that are accepted for publication will be published in the next issue of APEX.
Manuscripts submitted to APEX must contain original research, theoretical studies or accounts of practice that contribute to our understanding of giftedness and of talent development.
Submissions should be approximately 6000-8000 words in Word format and be made by email to the editor, Janna Wardman (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Submitted Manuscripts are required to meet the following criteria:
• Identifiers removed to allow for blind review
• Double-spacing and Times New Roman 12 point
• An abstract of 100-150 words
• 3 to 5 keywords
• Written in keeping with guidelines of the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
• A separate title page that includes the title of the Manuscript, word count, full names, affiliations and contact details of all authors
• Tables and figures, if any, as separate attachments
• An accompanying brief biographical statement about the author(s).
If any Manuscript incorporates copyright protected material, authors must identify that information and have written permission from the original publisher to reproduce this material (on equivalent terms to those set out in these Submission Guidelines). In addition, appropriate acknowledgement will need to be given of the permission granted in the Manuscript, and that the permission authorises publication on the basis outlined in these Submission Guidelines.
Upon acceptance of a manuscript, Authors will be requested to sign licensing document prior to publication.
