Many drugs, including antibiotics such as gentamicin, have been associated with the development of a drug-induced thrombocytopenia. Serologic methods for detection of drug-dependent plateIet antibodies (DDPAs) are not routinely performed, and the incidence of such antibody-mediated thrombocytopenia is not known. As we routinely perform solid-phase red cell adherence assays for the detection of DDPAs, a study was designed to determine the incidence of gentamicin-associated platelet

Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are among the main agents associated with nosocomial infections with high mortality in immunocompromised patients. Antibiotic resistance, especially against gentamicin and vancomycin among Enterococci, is a risk factor that could increase the morbidity and mortality rate. 179 Enterococci isolates from burn patients were included in this study. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was done using the disk diffusion test and minimum inhibitory

(8.0%) can produce extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL). E. coli was highly sensitive to imipenem (100.0%), gentamicin (91.0%), nitrofurantoin (89.4%), amikacin (88.2%), piperacillin/ tazobactam (87.0%) and cephalosporins (79.7–89.5%). Low sensitivity was found in relation to fluoroquinolones (60.3–70.4%). E. coli was least sensitive to ampicillin (30.2%) and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (49.9%). We observed a significant fall in susceptibility level to piperacillin/tazobactam (68.4% vs. 88.8%; p

-negative bacterium Serratia liquefaciens was isolated from supernatant solutions of agglutinated RBCs. Further characterization of this strain revealed that it has the ability to form biofilms; presents high levels of resistance to chloramphenicol, neomycin, and gentamicin;and causes mannose-sensitive hemagglutination. The source of S.liquefaciens contamination in RBC supernatants was not found. However, this bacterium has not been isolated since January 2006 after enhanced cleaning practices were

Primary endometrium epithelial cell cultures. Epithelial cells from the endometrium were recovered using the protocol by Skarzynski et al. (2000) with some modifications. The uterus was removed from five sacrificed cows 15 min after exsanguination. A piece of the uterus, 5 cm2, was removed and washed three times in Hank’s solution supplemented with 1.6 mg/ml gentamicin and transported to the laboratory in the same

susceptibility of the isolates to 20 antibiotics representing nine classes was determined according to the standard disk diffusion method recommended by The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST 2014). The antimicrobials comprised: amikacin (30 μg), tobramycin (10 μg), netilmicin (10 μg), gentamicin (10 μg), ticarcillin (75 μg), ciprofloxacin (5 μg), norfloxacin (10 μg), cefotaxime (5 μg), ceftaroline (5 μg), ceftazidime (10 μg), cefoperazone (10 μg), cefepime (30 μg), co
